Officials there said having a one-word name would make it easier to promote its identity on the national stage. Perhaps the most complex series of country name changes revolves around a central European country that no longer exists. Yugoslavia was first cobbled together out of the wreckage of World War I and was officially called the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. In it was renamed the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. In it was renamed again as the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and a series of brutal internal conflicts, Yugoslavia came apart in After various boundary changes and more conflicts, the former Yugoslavia territory is today comprised of the modern states of Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovenia, Macedonia, and Montenegro.
Serbia's Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija unilaterally declared its independence in The Democratic Republic of Congo has also undergone many name changes. Later it became the Belgian Congo, then Congo-Leopoldville, and finally after its independence in , the Republic of Congo. A few years later that was modified to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Jordan and Iraq formed a short-lived confederation known as the Hashemite Arab Federation dissolved in the same year.
Cambodia; Kingdom of Cambodia gained independence from France. Libya gained independence; since this time there have been various iterations of its state title [footnote 11] , now State of Libya, see Burma; Union of Burma became independent from United Kingdom and see subsequent changes in , and The name Transjordan was retained until then becoming Jordan.

Most of the countries on the list switched their name as a way of erasing part of their past and getting closer to their true identity, while others did it to encourage tourism, like the Netherlands.
However, not everything is as easy as it seems. Each nation paid millions of dollars, or its equivalent in their local currencies, to change its name. It is not a matter of having a clean slate. The Constitution, official stationery, and even money has to change as well. This, of course, takes time. And then you have the citizens who are used to calling their country by a certain name and have to become familiar with writing it and saying it in another.
