There are definitely times when this is not the right mic, but I'll probably be using this mic for interviews and podcast recordings for some time at least until the cable breaks!

That knowledge gap cost me a very important interview a few days ago. My dear video-pro friend wants me to use all this equipment but that's just not realistic for this, ahem, broadcasting home-educating mom!

I live in Florida and the plan is to wander around the Everglades, recording the natural environment. This device is suitable for all guitarists whether you play acoustic guitar, vocals, piano, drums, etc. You can use it to record your guitar amp, acoustic guitar or vocals quickly and easily.
Simple home recording: I now prefer using the iRig Mic Studio when I record vocals or acoustic guitar instead of my old setup. Being able to simply plug the iRig in my PC and position it where I want just makes life easy.
Otherwise, this is a very easy to use option. Complex recording needs: the iRig Mic Studio works best when you only need one input at a time. If you want to have multiple microphones recording at once, you will need an audio interface. It covers all the major aspects of setting up a home recording studio. There are plenty of microphones on the market with a wide range of prices. The Apogee MiC link to price and full details on Amazon offers a very similar unit with similar features.
The unit does cost quite a bit more. Whether you should choose the iRig Mic Studio or the Apogee MiC 96k depends mainly on what devices you use and your budget.
Note: be aware there are two versions of the Apogee MiC 96k. The reason I recommend the iRig Mic Studio is because it is compatible with all devices. On the other hand, Garage Band is probably optimized for recording from the internal mic and most likely does some filtering that isn't present when recording with an external microphone.
The iRig Mic recording sounded much more realistic to me, while the iPad 2's mic seemed to be a bit flat. From the standpoint of someone recording voice from a mobile device like the iPhone 4 or the iPad, the iRig Mic does a very capable job at an affordable price. Since I'm not a musician, I cannot vouch for the capabilities of the iRig Mic for music vocals -- for that, my colleague and pro musician Matt Tinsley will pick up the reins and write an upcoming review of his experiences with this hardware.
