With Series co-creator Bryan Elsley leaving the show to work on the US adaptation although he still stayed on as a consultant and executive producer , [15] Jamie Brittain served as the only show runner for the fifth series. John Griffin served as the main executive producer for the fifth series along with Bryan Elsley in a lesser capacity, as noted above , as George Ferber and Charles Pattinson left the show to work on the US adaptation. Christine Healy and Matt Strevens served as producers for the fifth series.
The fifth series' incidental music was composed by Fat Segal, who also composed the show's opening theme. The fifth series' theme song is a remix of the official theme tune used for Series 1 ; however, it is also a different remix from the ones used for Series 2 , Series 3 , and for Series 4.
Unseen Skins are a series of canonical online-exclusive mini-episodes that fills in a narrative gap somewhere in the timeline from the episode it correlates to. During the course of Series 5, nine "mini-sodes" were released on E4.
As most of the mini-sodes were not in video format, instead being photos, blog posts, twitter feeds, music, etc, they were not included on the DVD release of Skins: Complete Fifth Series.
However they are all available for viewing on E4's official Skins site. To advertise the fifth series of Skins , E4 created a trailer featuring the new cast floating naked in a dark abyss. However, as they begin to fall their clothes come back on until they are fully dressed right as their fall slows before they reach the ground. The song used in the trailer is "Ready to Start" by Arcade Fire. Another trailer was also released, featuring "Mirrors" by Crocodiles. The Fifth Series received generally positive reviews in the UK, with many critics calling it a return to form for the show.
Critics praised the Series' new direction in focusing on more realistic teen issues and discussing them in a remarkably adult manner instead of focusing on the characters' constant "deviant behavior", something many critics felt hampered down much of the previous two series.
The Guardian gave the Series a positive review, stating that "the new bunch of mates seem to suggest a return to the hedonistic feel of the original series. This time, however, it isn't a cool kid like Tony who is out to charm our socks off. As we meet the new gang at Roundview, it looks like they're focusing on the outcasts' point of view from the off. With an intriguing bunch of outcast kids and a refreshed sense of hedonism, Skins looks like it could be back on form.
Even with all the changes, Skins still has its unique charm, and it has only made me anticipate whatever is coming next even more. Reception in North America was a bit more mixed, but still generally positive, with many similarly calling the Series a return to form for the show.
It's settled into a consistent tone, being more adept at balancing the light and shade. For once, rather than giving its audience a steady diet of shagging and wanking scenes, [Skins] is talking to them like adults. Far from being derivative, for once Skins seems to be representing genuine teenagers.
Rather than whimsical fantasies of outsmarting low rent gangsters, we're seeing storylines that affect teenagers of every generation. After all the juvenile wanking jokes and reckless partying, maybe now Skins has grown up. However, it is available on Netflix's Instant Watch. Error: please try again. Mini plays the long game and Franky finds herself befriended by the girls. When she won't conform to what Mini expects of her she is spat out.
Franky meets Matty, who understands and empowers her. Franky stands up to Mini, which inspires Grace to join her. A new gang is formed - Franky, Alo, Rich and Grace.
Franky has finally found friends, but in doing so has started a war with Mini. S5, Ep2. Rich uses his taste in extreme music to keep the world, especially girls, at bay.
When Alo finds Rich's perfect woman, Rich is forced to into pairing up with Grace to learn how to chat up girls. But first she must learn the ways of metal to impersonate a practise metal chick. Rich continually pushes Grace away, refusing to believe a mainstream girl could understand him.
He loses his hearing and learns about compromise. Rich allows Grace into his world, but has his heart broken when she puts Mini and Liv first. S5, Ep3. Mini is under threat. When Grace brings Franky into the Charity Fashion Show, Mini sacks them both, and re-imagines the show in her own image to cement her power.
Despite appearances, her relationship is also rocky - Nick can't wait forever for sex. As Mini struggles to maintain control, Liv acts out in the worst way possible - giving Nick what Mini failed to. Mini discovers but pretends it hasn't happened.
Mini loses her virginity at the wrong time, with the wrong person and for all the wrong reasons. S5, Ep4. Liv continues to sleep with Nick, unsure why. Mini befriends the gang to isolate Liv.
As we meet the new gang at Roundview, it looks like they're focusing on the outcasts' point of view from the off. Characters like Sid and Cassie have always been given the best treatment by the show's twentysomething writers. Most interesting for now, at least is androgynous La Roux-alike Franky, who last night stormed in to school on a mobility scooter, sending every kid in the place screaming.
Franky, who has relocated from Oxford, has had a difficult past and is determined to make a new start. Of course, within half an hour it had caught up with her. And who made sure of that? The school's mean girl, Mini, instantly recognisable to Tina Fey fans and anyone who's found themselves on the wrong side of "cool", and determined to make Franky conform to her ideas of style. Judging by a couple of cagey looks, Mini must be hiding something under that pink get-up, but what?
During our first introduction, Liv had little more to do than scamper after her leader — but the lovely Grace little voice, big attitude made a promising start, finishing the episode by ditching Mini's Mogadishu-themed soiree - like, Somali Pirates are totally in this year - and jumping in a pool with outcast Franky.
I'm expecting emotional turmoil as she decides between sticking with meanie Mini or making a go of it alone. Also trying to trying to crash the party were slacker-stoners Rich and Alo, who look set to become series favourites. Rich, a moisturising metalhead, won't shut up about just how misunderstood he is, while van-dwelling Alo predictably, but they make jokes about it just wants to get his wank claws near some 'vag'.
Or 'muff'.
